Opportunity:
GIS Earthquake Ground Motions in Kobe, Japan
Summary:
We are investigating ground motions produced by moderate sized earthquakes in Kobe, Japan as a comparison to those produced by the M6.9 1995 Kobe earthquake. For this project, the student would gather data on both the 1995 Kobe earthquake as well as more recent smaller earthquakes in the region and incorporate the information into a geographic information system (GIS). Besides earthquake data, the student will also collect spatial information on the geology of the region, ground motion recording stations, and any observed damage resulting from the earthquakes.
