Creating a Festival Almanac for Massachusetts |
| Summary: |
| |
In 2007 The Massachusetts Cultural Council initiated a pilot program to survey every festival in the state. This program, called Massachusetts Worldfest, made an excellent start but only surveyed festivals occurring from June through August. Unfortunately there is no comparable survey that covers the rest of the year. The Summer Scholar who works on this project will create a complete calendar of festivals for the entire state of Massachusetts, focusing on religious, civic, ethnic, seasonal, and trade-related celebrations. The Massachusetts Cultural Council has agreed to assist in this project lending important logistical and technical support.
The project will require ethnographic participation at different festival sites as well as the rigorous detailing of all available information on annual celebrations occurring in Massachusetts. Once gathered, we will attempt to create a new festival typology that will be disseminated in a number of ways including an article, website, and physical calendar. Honkfest, which takes place in Somerville and is one of the most significant new festivals in the country, has already requested this calendar for their 2009 celebration. My own scholarship and teaching in festive behavior has also noted the need for such a resource for many years. The results of this project, therefore, should make an invaluable contribution to scholars, practitioners, and the public throughout the region and beyond.
