Opportunity:
   Assessing Impact of Mining in Ghana: Looking Through a Regulatory and Community Lens
Summary:
   Collect relevant documents at the national level with regards to recent changes in the regulation of mining in Ghana. Of particular interest is the impact of “The Minerals and Mining Act-2006”. Also of interest will be obtaining the perspective of various stakeholders including government officials, representatives of the mining industry, and members and organizations representing the community.

What is the timeframe for this research opportunity?
   May - August 2009
Prerequisities for students?
   Background in international relations and/or community health and geology, demonstrated ability to conduct independent research a plus.
Responsibilities for students?
   data collection, aptitude for conducting interviews with stakeholders, perform a synthesis of appropriate policy trajectories at the regional and national level within Ghana, ability to interpret economic data regarding the importance of mining in the national and regional economies, ability to assess the feasibility of obtaining public health data useful in assessing impact of mining on a population basis.
