Opportunity:
   Asthma treatment communication
Summary:
The treatment and management of asthma presents a multitude of challenges for patients and providers alike. The additional burden of communication barriers often result in poorer outcomes for patients who are culturally and/or linguistically different from providers. I am interested to conduct a qualitative study of asthma health-related communication in a diverse cultural setting. Specifically, the study will employ participant observation to capture negotiated meanings in the interactions between asthma patients, or parent of patients, and health care providers in an urban public hospital setting. Findings will provide valuable insights for the development of appropriate and sensitive treatment protocols, training and patient education.
