"Pandemic preparedness": national borders and social imagination

Summary:

How nations are responding to the potential for an avian flu pandemic - part of an ongoing study of national and international measures to meet emergent threats to the public health. Building on existing research into the policies developed by the European Union and several of its member states, a student would have the opportunity to expand the analysis to investigate the preparations of Russia and its neighbors.

What is the timeframe for this research opportunity?

summer 2009 (with a view to building on the research through the following academic year)

Prerequisities for students?

Languages - Russian; some experience in comparative research

Responsibilities for students?

Compilation of national, regional and local plans. Analysis of decisions taken with regard to: surveillance; vaccine acquisition and stockpiling of antivirals; care of the sick and the dying; strategies of prevention. Field research in winter 2009.
