Information for Faculty - Tufts 2004 Summer Scholars

 

 

Application Deadline

Friday, March 14, 2008 at 11:00 AM sharp (Late applications will NOT be accepted.) Applications are due in Dowling 710.

Applicant Requirements

  • All applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or greater at the time of application.

  • All applicants must be a sophomore, junior, or senior at Tufts University during the 2008-2009 academic year.

  • All applicants must submit their application following the instructions presented in the application packet.

  • All applicants must agree to the student expectations outlined in the application packet.
     

Application Components

  • Completed “Application Form”

  • “Opportunity Detail” page

  • Applicant’s college transcript(s)

  • Resume

  • Project essay

  • Biographical essay

  • Letter of collaboration, written jointly by student and mentor

  • Two letters of recommendation

Program Requirements

Employment

  • No other employment can be undertaken during the term of the scholarship (June through August) without express consent from the program before application is made.

  • Enrollment in courses relevant to the research project is permitted but only with express consent by the program.  Plans for Summer School should be mentioned in the application.  Questions concerning this should be addressed before application is made. 

Residency

Nature of the Research/Scholarly Project

  • Research must be supervised by a Tufts faculty mentor.

  • Research can be done in any field, although it is usually done in the applicant's major or minor field of study.

  • The applicant can join an on-going research project but must "own" part of it, even as a member of a research group or team.

  • The summer research project involves written and oral presentations.

    • A written report on the results of the summer research to one’s mentor and to the Dean of Undergraduate Education (3-5 pages)

    • You will be asked to participate in a poster session put on by the Program, the Provost's Office, and the Dean of Undergraduate Education in the fall

    • You will be asked to participate in the Tufts Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium in March 2009

  • Can be a creative project undertaken with the guidance of a faculty advisor.

Amount of Award

  • $3,500 living stipend for off campus housing.

  • $1,000 student research budget.

    • Used on materials, travel, and other research expenses as deemed appropriate by the Program.

    • The student's research budget can be used during the summer of research or to support related research that might follow, such as a senior thesis or another kind of independent project.  Receipts for reimbursement should be brought to Dowling 710 and given to Joanne Ferguson.

  • $1,000 in research funds for the supporting faculty/clinical mentor.

    • The funds will be transferred directly into the mentor's department account. More details on this process will follow.

    • If a scholar or faculty/clinical mentor is unable to carry out the research project approved by the Scholarship Committee, both parties will be expected to forfeit the financial grant.
